Technology Autobiography

I have never been confident in my ability to effectively use technology, both personally and in the classroom. At home I use basic applications such as Word, the Internet, and Instant Messaging. In other words, I only do what is necessary for me to get by and communicate with others. I often get easily frustrated when the computer is not functioning as I think it should or when I am struggling to learn something new. I always need extra explanation and clarification when learning something new that relates to technology. For example, I have learned how to create a webpage multiple times and I could not even begin to explain how to make one right now. In other words, if I can get by without using technology I will.

During my student teaching last semester I forced myself to integrate technology into a few lessons. I quickly became a big fan of the ELMO, which is essentially an updated overhead projector. I also had students perform multiple webquests for Social Studies lessons. In addition, during one math lesson on rounding, addition, and subtraction I made use of a website that allowed students to practice these skills in a creative and different way than they were used to. As a result of my lack of confidence with technology, I think that my lessons were not always as effective as they might otherwise have been. Had I been more comfortable with the applications and devices, I would have brought more enthusiasm into the lesson and thus the students may have gained more from their experience. Through taking this class I look forward to learning how to integrate technology into the classroom effective ways that I am also confident in teaching.
